Ultrasonic Cleaner vs. Cleaning Tablets – Which Is Better for Your Retainer?

If you wear aligners or a retainer, you know the dilemma: cleaning tablets are convenient, affordable, and available everywhere. Ultrasonic cleaners sound more technical, more expensive – and somehow more serious. But what actually works? And do you even need both?
Short answer: both methods have their strengths – but they clean in fundamentally different ways. Understanding that difference helps you make the right decision for your retainer.
How Do Cleaning Tablets Work?
Cleaning tablets dissolve in water and release active substances – usually sodium percarbonate or similar oxidising agents. These have antibacterial properties, lighten mild discolouration, and noticeably reduce odour.
The catch: the chemistry works on the surface. It doesn't penetrate micro-cracks or deep-seated deposits. The retainer sits passively in the water – the tablet "waits" for whatever is accessible. Deep-seated biofilm often remains untouched.
How Does an Ultrasonic Cleaner Work?
Ultrasonic cleaners generate high-frequency sound waves in water – typically 40,000 to 45,000 vibrations per second. These waves create tiny pressure bubbles that burst against the surface of the retainer. This effect is called cavitation.
The key point: cavitation acts everywhere simultaneously – including inside the micro-cracks, grooves and surface irregularities of the plastic that neither a brush nor a tablet can reach. The retainer is never physically touched – no scrubbing, no rubbing. Just sound waves and water.
Good to know: Ultrasonic and tablets don't clean the same thing – they complement each other. Ultrasonic removes biofilm and deposits physically. Tablets work chemically against bacteria and odour. Together, they deliver the most thorough clean.
The Direct Comparison
Here's a quick overview of how both methods differ:
| Cleaning Tablets | Ultrasonic Cleaner | |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning depth | Surface only | Surface + micro-cracks |
| Time needed | 15–30 minutes | 3–5 minutes |
| Biofilm removal | Partial | Complete |
| Odour control | Good | Good |
| Retainer-safe | Yes, if correctly dosed | Yes, fully non-contact |
| Travel-friendly | Ideal – light and compact | Home use, not portable |
| Cost | Ongoing running cost | One-time purchase |
| Best used as | Daily supplement | Daily foundation |
What Should You Use and When?
At home in the morning: The ultrasonic cleaner is your foundation. Add water, drop in your retainer, press start. In 5 minutes it's cleaned more thoroughly than after 30 minutes in a tablet solution. Add a cleaning tablet to the water and you get the best of both worlds – physical and chemical cleaning at the same time.
While travelling: Tablets are unbeatable here. Light, affordable, no power needed. One tablet in a hotel glass is plenty for a solid clean on the go.
If your retainer is already discoloured or cloudy: Tablets alone won't fix that. The ultrasonic cleaner can break down stubborn deposits over several cycles – especially when combined with a tablet in the water.
Our Verdict
Cleaning tablets are convenient – but they don't replace an ultrasonic cleaner. If you want truly clean, fresh and transparent retainers, ultrasonic is non-negotiable. The combination of both is what we recommend to all our customers: the Sonic One as your daily foundation, and the Sterilising Tablets for extra freshness and as your travel companion.
Most people who try ultrasonic for the first time are genuinely surprised by how clear and fresh their retainer looks and feels straight after.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use cleaning tablets in an ultrasonic cleaner?
Yes – and it's actually recommended. Adding half or a full tablet to the water in your ultrasonic cleaner combines physical and chemical cleaning. The result: even fresher odour and even more thorough bacteria removal.
How often do I need tablets if I have an ultrasonic cleaner?
Less often. Without ultrasonic we recommend daily. With an ultrasonic cleaner, adding a tablet to the water once or twice a week is enough – or daily if you want maximum freshness.
Are cheaper cleaning tablets just as good as more expensive ones?
Not always. Look for tablets specifically developed for retainers and aligners made from thermoplastic. Overly aggressive ingredients can damage the plastic over time or cause it to turn cloudy.
Is an ultrasonic cleaner worth it if I only swap my retainer once a week?
Yes – especially then. The longer you wear a retainer, the more biofilm builds up. Daily ultrasonic cleaning keeps it transparent and hygienic right up until the swap, reduces odour and protects your gums.
What if I don't want to buy an ultrasonic cleaner – are tablets enough?
Tablets are better than nothing. They noticeably reduce odour and surface bacteria. But deep-seated biofilm – the main cause of persistent odour and cloudiness – can't be fully removed by tablets alone.
