How Often Should You Clean Your Dental Guard? The Clear Answer

One of the most common questions we get: how often do I actually need to clean my dental guard? Daily? Every two days? Is once a week enough? The answers online range from "after every wear" to "once weekly" — no wonder there's confusion.
The clear answer depends on two things: which type of guard you wear and which method you clean with. Here's the full breakdown — short and to the point.
The Short Answer
A quick clean — rinsing under cold water — should happen after every wear, so daily. A thorough clean with cleaning tablets or ultrasonic we recommend at least every two days when using ultrasonic, and daily without.
The reason is simple: bacteria form a new biofilm on the guard within less than 24 hours. Anyone who only cleans thoroughly once a week lets this biofilm grow for six days — with the familiar consequences: odour, cloudiness, yellowing and an increased risk of dental problems.
Cleaning Frequency by Guard Type
| Guard type | Quick clean | Thorough clean |
|---|---|---|
| Invisalign / aligners | Every time you take them out | Daily (22h wear time) |
| Retainer (removable) | After every wear | Daily to every 2 days |
| Night / bite guard | In the morning after wearing | At least every 2 days |
| Sports mouthguard | After every use | After every use |
Rule of thumb: The longer you wear the guard each day, the more often it needs a thorough clean. An aligner worn 22 hours a day needs daily deep cleaning — a night-only guard is fine with a thorough clean every two days.
Why the Method Determines the Frequency
Not every clean is equally thorough — and that affects how often you need to clean.
Rinsing only: Removes surface saliva but no biofilm. Needs to be supplemented with a thorough method — it isn't enough on its own.
Cleaning tablets only: Clean and disinfect the surface well. Without ultrasonic we recommend daily use, as deep-seated biofilm is only partially reached.
Ultrasonic + tablet: The most thorough method. Since biofilm is also dislodged from micro-cracks, a thorough clean every two days is enough here — daily if worn heavily or for aligner wear times.
What Happens If You Clean Too Rarely?
Cleaning too rarely has concrete consequences that build up over time: first comes the odour, then visible cloudiness and yellowing. At the same time the bacterial load on the guard rises — and with it the risk of bad breath, gum inflammation, cavities and, in susceptible people, fungal infections.
The tricky part: the guard sits directly against your teeth for many hours. Whatever grows on it lands directly on your enamel. A neglected guard is therefore not just a hygiene problem but a direct health risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it enough to clean the guard thoroughly once a week?
No. Bacteria form a new biofilm within less than 24 hours. Weekly cleaning lets this grow for six days — leading to odour, yellowing and increased dental risk. A thorough clean should happen daily to every two days, depending on the guard type.
Do I really need to clean the guard every day?
For aligners with 22 hours of wear time: yes, daily. For night-only guards, a thorough clean every two days combined with a daily quick rinse is enough. If you use ultrasonic cleaning, the advantage is that a daily clean only takes 3–5 minutes — the effort is minimal.
Can I clean my guard too often?
With the right methods — ultrasonic and suitable cleaning tablets — no. These are material-safe and non-contact. Caution is only needed with the wrong methods: daily scrubbing with a toothbrush or frequent soaking in vinegar or acid damages the plastic, no matter how often.
When's the best time to clean the guard – morning or evening?
For night guards, in the morning right after wearing, since most biofilm forms overnight. For aligners, ideally a quick clean morning and evening, with a thorough clean in the morning. What matters most is consistency — the exact timing is secondary.
How often should I use cleaning tablets?
In combination with an ultrasonic cleaner, the Sterilising Tablets are enough once or twice a week, since most of the cleaning is done physically. Without ultrasonic, we recommend daily use for optimal hygiene.
