The Complete Care Guide for Invisalign Wearers

Invisalign aligners are transparent, removable — and more high-maintenance than most wearers expect at the start. What many only realise after a few weeks: the aligner starts to smell, turns cloudy, or the gums feel irritated. None of that has to happen.
This guide walks through exactly what to do every day — morning, evening, and on the go — and which methods actually work. No filler, just what matters.
Why Invisalign Care Matters So Much
An Invisalign treatment costs between £2,500 and £7,000 — depending on complexity and provider. The aligners sit in your mouth for up to 22 hours a day, directly against your teeth. During that time, bacteria, saliva and food residue accumulate on the aligner surface and inside the micro-cracks of the thermoplastic material.
That has direct consequences: bacteria on the aligner sit directly against your teeth. A poorly maintained aligner increases the risk of cavities, gum inflammation and the feared white spots — permanent enamel damage caused by bacterial acid production that becomes visible once the treatment ends.
Good care doesn't just protect the aligner — it protects the result of the entire treatment.
The most important rule: Never eat with your aligner in. Never use hot water (above 40°C distorts the plastic). And clean daily — not weekly. Bacteria rebuild in less than 24 hours.
The Daily Morning Routine
Morning is the most important cleaning moment of the day — not because the aligner is at its dirtiest, but because bacteria have had ideal growing conditions overnight, with reduced saliva flow providing minimal natural protection.
Step 1 — Aligner into the ultrasonic cleaner: First thing after waking, take out the aligner and drop it into the Sonic One™. Add lukewarm water, optionally half a Sterilising Tablet — press start. 3–5 minutes. Use that time to brush your teeth, shower, make coffee. The aligner is ready when you are.
Step 2 — Water flosser: Before putting the aligner back in, run the Sonic Mini™ for 60 seconds along the teeth — flushing out overnight bacteria from the gaps before the aligner goes back on.
Step 3 — Reinsert the aligner: Give it a quick rinse under cool water and put it back in. Done — total routine under 10 minutes.
During the Day — What to Watch For
Always remove the aligner before eating. This sounds obvious, but it's easy to forget. Food debris trapped under the aligner is the fastest route to cavities — bacteria get direct access to sugars and nutrients, right against the enamel, sealed in by the aligner.
After eating: brush your teeth or at least rinse before putting the aligner back in. If you're out and don't have a toothbrush: rinse your mouth with water and optionally do a quick pass with the water flosser. That's enough for between meals.
Only water while wearing the aligner. Coffee, tea, juice, fizzy drinks — all out. Coloured drinks stain the aligner. Sugary drinks sit under the aligner and promote cavities directly. Hot drinks distort the plastic with repeated exposure.
Never store the aligner dry. If you put it down briefly, keep it moist — either in the case with a small amount of water, or with a lightly dampened Sterilising Tablet. Dry storage causes the aligner to dry out, making it more prone to discolouration and odour.
The Evening Routine — the Most Important Moment
The evening clean matters more than the morning one — because whatever you clean now (or don't) will sit directly against your teeth for the next 7–8 hours.
Step 1 — Water flosser first: Run the Sonic Mini before brushing. Flush all the gaps thoroughly — 90 seconds, working through each area. Food debris and bacteria out before the toothbrush comes in.
Step 2 — Brush your teeth: Electric toothbrush, thorough, all surfaces. Dental floss or interdental brushes are optional but recommended.
Step 3 — Clean the aligner: Aligner back in the Sonic One — a short cycle (3 minutes) with plain water is enough in the evening, if it was already cleaned thoroughly in the morning. For maximum hygiene: add a Sterilising Tablet.
Step 4 — Reinsert and sleep: Quick rinse, put it back in. Done.
On the Go — the Travel Routine
The Sonic Mini is built for travel — 12cm retracted, USB-C charging, 50-day battery life. It comes with you, no excuses. For aligner cleaning on the road, a compact alternative to the Sonic One works well: Sterilising Tablets dissolved in a glass of water — soak for 10 to 15 minutes, rinse, done.
What to always pack: Sonic Mini, Sterilising Tablets, aligner case, toothbrush. All of it fits in a small toiletry bag — genuinely no reason not to keep the routine going while travelling.
The Most Common Mistakes — and What They Cost
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Using a toothbrush to clean the aligner | Micro-scratches → more bacteria → odour, cloudiness |
| Hot water | Distortion of the aligner → poor fit |
| Drinking coffee or tea with aligner in | Heavy staining — barely reversible |
| Reinserting aligner immediately after eating | Cavities, white spots — permanent damage |
| Only cleaning weekly | Biofilm build-up → odour, gum inflammation |
| Storing aligner dry | Dried saliva → discolouration, odour |
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wear my aligner each day?
Invisalign recommends a minimum of 20–22 hours daily. Less wear time measurably slows down treatment. The aligner should only come out for eating, drinking (other than water) and cleaning.
What should I do if my aligner smells?
Put it straight into the ultrasonic cleaner with a Sterilising Tablet — two to three consecutive cycles. In most cases the smell disappears completely. If it persists, the aligner may already be too heavily colonised with bacteria and should be swapped out at the next scheduled tray change.
Can I clean my aligner with toothpaste?
No. Toothpaste contains abrasives that leave micro-scratches in the plastic. These scratches are barely visible to the naked eye, but give bacteria permanent places to hide — and the aligner becomes cloudier rather than clearer over time.
What are white spots and how do I prevent them?
White spots are irreversible areas of demineralisation on the enamel — caused by bacteria producing acids that act directly on the tooth surface. They develop when oral hygiene during aligner treatment is insufficient. Daily ultrasonic cleaning of the aligner, thorough brushing and regular water flossing dramatically reduce the risk.
How often should I use cleaning tablets?
With an ultrasonic cleaner: once or twice a week is enough — the majority of cleaning is already handled physically. If using tablets alone without an ultrasonic cleaner: daily for optimal hygiene. The combination of both is the most thorough approach.
