A letter from Leon Schmidt, founder of SonicSmile.

It started in Lucerne with a simple question: how could the daily cleaning of clear aligners actually be made easier and better?

When I first began to look into the subject more closely, I didn't want to just launch another product. I wanted to understand first what people really need in everyday use.

So I set out.

From Lucerne, I visited more than 250 dental and orthodontic practices across Switzerland and Germany, and spoke with dentists, dental hygienists and practice assistants. I wanted to know what they recommend to their patients, what experiences they have with existing solutions, and where there was still room for improvement.

It quickly became clear to me that cleaning aligners and retainers was, for many people, a necessary but poorly thought-through part of their daily routine. There were various solutions – but none that truly convinced me.

That was exactly where I wanted to start.

From the idea to the first product

Out of those conversations came the idea to rethink cleaning altogether.

I began to look intensively at different technologies and possibilities. Ultrasonic cleaning came more and more into focus. The technology wasn't new – but its application to the daily cleaning of aligners still left plenty of room for a more thoughtful solution.

Out of that idea came the Sonic One.

From the very beginning, it was important to me not to simply cram as much technology as possible into a product. Above all, it had to be one thing: easy to use and genuinely useful for everyday life.

From Lucerne out into the world

From a single thought in Lucerne and countless conversations in practices, SonicSmile has grown into what it is today.

What began as the search for a better way to clean aligners is now a brand for modern oral care.

Our roots are in Switzerland. And the closeness to the people it all started with has stayed with us: listen, question, and make things better – rather than simply copying what already exists.

Because for me, good products aren't born at a desk. They're born where you understand real problems – and hold yourself to developing a better solution from them.

That was the idea behind SonicSmile. And it still is today.
